Run 1104, 27 July 2005 – XmasInJuly Hare: Mothball Venue: The TigerMothBall Cocoon – 23 Pitt Street, Ashburton .

Too bad if you missed it because this was undoubtedly the best TigerMothBall run of the year so far. Not to mention it being the first in a new tradition of Annual Christmas-In-July Runs. The only thing missing was a scribe, because the OnSec was not there and the GM forgot to delegate anyone to take notes, so what follows will have to do.

The runners set out through the creeks, streets and dark parks of Ashburton, many decked out in their Xmas regalia. A few unmarked false trails seemed to keep the pack busy, so that several times during the run, the runners crossed paths with the walkers, and all ended up at the drink stop at about the same time. Some would say this would be the hallmark of an excellent run, but I would put it down to good Mothball luck.

Back at the Cocoon, we all waited in anticipation of our unseasonal Christmas feast. As it turned out, Tiger Moth had a plan for us to sing for our supper. The Karaoke player was all set and the pack gathered. There was a jolly old rendition of A Partridge in a Pear Tree (12 verses) followed by We Wish You a Merry Christmas (a lot of verses). Since singing is a new Lakeside tradition, it all was done in excellent spirit. There is a lot to be said for getting these cultural festivals back to their original purpose, I say. The only trouble is that the antipodean solstice festival should be in June not July, but of course logic does not come into these things. Just enjoy it, and we did. Having earned it, we got down to business with the turkey, rice and Caribbean corn mash feast. Some got into it about three times . When the circle started the hares were commended with a score of 100/104. New runner Kyoko was welcomed with returnee Swiss Roll. Lotsafun, Addon, TigerMoth and Mothball had significant runs. The GM then charged GG, (tipping), Sooty (Full Moon downhill sore legs on Wednesday syndrome) and Karen and Ian (Lords Test defeat compensation), before handing over to the Sergeant. But wait. There was a small voice of protest. Mayu had said to her Mummy Kyoko, “what about me?” Quite right too, and so our new four year old recruit was duly welcomed to the Hash, along with her kindergarten playmate, Addon.

After handing over to  Sergeant Clitus, this unprepared scribe failed to pay much attention to the charges, but I do recall that after the joke telling, Mothball got a few charges, one from E&B for a undersize whine glass, and one for infrequent arrows. E&B and Sooty were charged for avoiding the singalong, but still getting supper. Klingon was charged for asking meat advice from a vegetarian. Gerbils and Whippet were charged for wearing their masks. All the people who used to live in London were charged with escaping current troubles. This turned out to be more than half the pack, none of whom were English. Some of them even managed a rendition of Maybe its Because I’m a Londoner before the down down.

After all the fun, it was time to draw the raffle, which was a good call because on this occasion, there really was a raffle. Eventually all the prizes were awarded to those who had not won one already The HareRaiser Prince announced that next week’s run would be at The Plough and Harrow, 596 Swanston St, Carlton, Melways 2B E9.
