Run 1309, 27 Feb 2009 Hare: WSHHH Venue: Oxford Scholar – Red Dress Run.

Friday’s Red Dress Run was a wonderful success, with some 60 hashers turning up to run in their finest red dresses and collect money for the Salvation Army’s Bushfires Appeal.

The money in the tins will be counted by the Salvos soon, and the totals will be reported. Nearly all the tins were VERY heavy, and apparently many contain heaps of folding money, too! But even before that amount is tallied, we raised over $1800.00 through the door take and donations, including a very big cheque from IBM and some nice extra cash donations from Ginger Beer, TJ, and Took Too Long!

HardCore’s photos are up at  http://tinyurl.com/aclree    and mine are at  http://tinyurl.com/2009rdr

We had attendees from every Melbourne-area hash, and visitors from the UK, Brisbane, and Cairns! Visitor “Simmo”, who last hashed in Azerbaijan, couldn’t remember his hash name…..

It was noted that a couple of D&E hashers were among those who lost houses in the fires, and that worst of all, Warrnambool hashers Missionary & Toitus lost their daughter & son-in-law and two young grand-daughters.

The Salvation Army rep, Kris, explained that there are NO admin costs taken out of the donations, and that money is exactly what is so needed now. He was very impressed with the “couture rouge” on display, although he pointed out that some had neglected leg-shaving! (Among these was NOT Lester, who had beautified himself thoroughly, and de-fuzzed his legs AND chest!)

During the run, Phart Lap was told by someone that “a man in a dress” had made “inappropriate comments” to a young lad in his group. “Was it him?”, she replied, pointing to Lester, who was with her and the Junior Woodies at the time. “No,” the fellow replied, “it was the other one!”. ” ‘The other one’? There are 50 of us!” “Well, he was older and a bit overweight!” the complainant stated. Yeah that narrows it down…..!   😉

The run went through the usual high-traffic areas – Swanston Street, Chinatown, the theatre district, and Southbank. The drink stop by the Southbank pedestrian bridge consisted of water and also red watery frothy beer — which, oddly enough, many went for seconds of!  It was a balmy night, and happily not the 37 degrees (nor the rain) forecast.

And prizes – we had so many great, donated prizes!! Thank you all so much!! Firstly to the publican of the Oxford Scholar Hotel, Malcolm Wulf – not only does he always provide the meals at a good price so we can maximise donations, he gives us the down-down jugs free, and this year he donated 12 bottles for prizes – 2 bottle of gin and 10 nice reds!
