INTERHASH GOA, INDIA!!! 27-29 September 2002. Dial in to http://www.goa2002.com/ for all details. Goa was a colony of Portugal for 450 years. It was “discovered” by that inveterate Hasher Vasco da Gama in 1510. When India (and Pakistan) threw the Poms out in 1947, Goa remained Portuguese. It was gobbled up by the Indian army with almost no resistance in 1961, and became a Union Territory. Goa achieved full-fledged status as a State in 1987. Area: 3700 sq km (1428 sq mi), roughly the size of the US state of Rhode Island or the ACT in Australia. It is by far India’s smallest state. Capital: Panaji. Population (1991): 1,168,600.

Where is Goa? On the south-western coast of India (the Malabar Coast). This part of the Indian Ocean is called the Arabian Sea. Goa is 580 km south of Bombay (Mumbai), 600 km northwest of Bangalore, 900 km northwest of Madras(Chennai), and 1900km south of Delhi. If you can’t find it on a map, look for the name of its capital, the town of Panaji (Panjim).

How do you get to Goa? Air connections from Bombay, Bangalore, and several other Indian cities. You fly to Goa direct from Kuwait and Sharjah on Indian Airlines. There are also charter flights from the UK and other places in Europe.. The main port of entry is Bombay (Mumbai), one of the world’s busiest airports. This is amazingly easy to do since there are 14 direct flights from London alone, not to mention dozens of others from Europe, the USA, the Middle and Far East, Africa and Australia. From Bombay to Goa you have two main options: air and rail. There are 12 daily flights from Bombay, Madras (Chennai), Bangalore and several other Indian cities.

What language is spoken in Goa? Several. The local language is Konkani, an impossibly difficult language to learn. Portuguese is still spoken by the elite, but is not understood by the common people. Marathi and Hindi are widely spoken. Because Goa thrives on tourism, almost every Goan speaks at least a smattering of English.

Tell us about the runs! We will probably set 25-30 runs. As we get closer to the event and have a better idea of the numbers, we will be able to fine tune the run numbers. As promised, Interhash Goa 2002 will be a “Back to Basics” affair. Amongst other things, this means that we will not be catering to serious athletes. If you want to compete in marathons, what the hell are you doing Hashing?

What about Pre-Lewds and Post-Lewds? Hang onto your hats! Here are a few of the special Hashes and Hash Treks and Rail Jerks we have in mind for you: Camel HASHfari through the sand dunes of the Thar Desert near Jaisalmer, Rajasthan.: Special Southern Hash tour through Madras, Bangalore and Mysore; Hash fishing trip on the Godaviri, where you are required by law to throw them back – a good thing, because they weigh up to 200kg! Scuba Hash in the Maldives.
